So, if you're a beach lover, this area is for you. People who spend several days in the area are encouraged to leave the city to explore the adjacent Riviera Nayarit. Spanning 192 miles of coastline, this area is dotted with charming villages where visitors are welcomed with open arms. Located immediately south of downtown, the Romantic Zone is one of the busiest and most popular areas of Puerto Vallarta.

It is known by many names, such as South Side, Old Town or Viejo Vallarta, which translates as Old Vallarta. The western border of the Romantic Zone is Playa de Los Muertos, and this beach is also the area's main attraction. A favorite activity is simply lounging on a beach chair on the golden sand while vendors stroll around selling their products. Another favorite attraction in the Romantic Zone is the Old Farmer's Market.

Running every weekend, this is where many of the locals pick up their fresh local produce. In addition to fruits and vegetables, look for cheeses, chocolates, ceramics, handmade tortillas, jewelry and much more. This is a great spot for a casual lunch, too. The romantic area is easy to explore on foot.

However, you'll find plenty of taxis and bus service in the area. From here you can also reach the center on foot. Also called Centro, Downtown is a popular place to stay in Puerto Vallarta. The hotel zone is to the north, while the romantic zone is to the south. Here, you'll see plenty of red tile roofs and colonial-era structures, making this neighborhood a charming place to call home.

Expect to see buildings painted in technicolor tones and splashes of bright bougainvillea dripping from doors and railings while in this neighborhood. Like the Romantic Zone, the center also has its share of cobbled streets, and along these roads, you'll discover many shops and restaurants that you won't find anywhere else in the world. As you would expect, the center is well connected by taxis and buses. The main tourist areas are easily accessible on foot, and the Romantic Zone can be reached on foot. Prices tend to be higher here than in the Romantic Zone.

However, this is a very desirable area. Travelers on a budget will find quite affordable properties here, especially those that are further from the beach. Puerto Vallarta's main highway, Francisco Medina Ascencio, crosses this quarter. Visitors who stay in this neighborhood will be happy to discover that taxis are everywhere. This facilitates access from the extensive hotel zone to the main tourist areas directly to the south, such as the center and the romantic zone.

Public buses that take passengers south are also located here. Hotel Zone buses also travel north to Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias and others. The Hotel Zone is mainly characterized by its beaches, of which there are five. These are Camarones Beach, Tranquila Beach, Las Glorias Beach, Los Tules Beach and Golden Beach. With their golden sands and easy access to the ocean, beaches are the Hotel Zone's best feature. Many visitors spend most of their time relaxing on the sand or playing in the water.

Another popular attraction in this neighborhood is the Galerías Vallarta shopping center with its department stores, boutiques, restaurants, and movie theaters. Additional shops, restaurants and bars can be enjoyed in the hotel zone. Most properties in the hotel zone are elegant, exclusive and expensive. Some offer the ultimate in luxury and can cost hundreds of dollars a night. The hotel zone also has all-inclusive resorts that include food, beverages and activities, as well as condominium complexes where guests enjoy all the comforts of home.

Marina Vallarta is a masterfully planned resort that also includes residential areas.

The centerpiece of the development is the marina itself, which has a capacity for almost 500 boats. A beautiful promenade runs through the marina. This is a wonderful place to enjoy a walk while enjoying the view. This exclusive enclave also has its own 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, bowling alley and grocery stores. Once installed here, it's almost unnecessary to wander anywhere else.

Parking is extremely limited at Marina Vallarta. Only those with housing in the neighborhood should expect to find parking.

It's probably best to visit it on foot from the center or take a taxi from the hotel zone or downtown. Once here it's easy to get around on foot. The name “Chinese Shells” refers to Chinese shells found in abundance only on local beaches. If you're looking for a quiet and secluded getaway this is definitely your neighborhood.
